Q&A's

People often have lots of questions about thermal imaging and whether its suitable for them.

Below are some of the more common questions.

If you want to know more or you have your own questions then please get in touch.

I play sport regularly, but I don’t feel like I have any issues is thermal imaging still useful?

Yes – thermal imaging is a useful screening tool to detect any potential injuries BEFORE damage occurs.

Small temperature changes indicates structural damage often before pain/stiffness occurs.

I’ve been receiving treatment for back pain but it’s only offering temporary relief. Would thermal imaging be helpful?

Yes – in some cases where you feel the pain might not be where the problem is originating from.

For example tennis elbow can be caused by a rotor cuff issue or headaches can be caused by a neck issue, your knee pain could be caused by a lower back/pelvic issue.

By pinpointing the origin of the pain your treatment plan can be adjusted accordingly.

I have a current injury diagnosed by my GP, can thermal imaging still be of any use?

Yes – thermal imaging can accurately assess the healing process of an injury and detect when healing is complete.

Do you diagnose medical conditions?

No – Thermal Imaging is a detection tool used to identify areas of dysfunction in the body but it can’t be used a standalone diagnostic tool.

Screening at Lincs Thermal Imaging concentrates on issues in the musculoskeletal system but as part of that can be used to detect and monitor conditions such as arthritis.

Do you work with other professionals? I’m an athlete and currently undergoing rehab with the team physio for a ligament injury.

Yes – the information from the imaging can be relayed directly to your support team. Being able to assess the injury and its response to treatment is important for an effective and shorter rehab.

In addition to this the injurie's response to increases in loading as work levels increase can also be accurately monitored. This drastically cuts down the incidence of re-injury.

Is it just for athletes or people who play sports/go to a gym?

No – thermal imaging is an assessment tool for anyone in pain who wants to either assess pain or monitor recovery.

It accurately maps pain and gives you a visual representation of what you are feeling.

By pinpointing the source of your pain you can direct the focus of treatment and find the right solutions

How long does the imaging take?

The imaging process is exactly the same as process as having normal photographs taken.

There is a short period before I take the images where you will need to have the appropriate areas uncovered.

During this time we will discuss your particular issues in reference to what you want imaging and why. It's a quick, easy and non-contact process with results available quickly too.

You will be emailed a copy of your results and images.

What sort of conditions can you detect?

At Lincs Thermal Imaging it’s mainly musculoskeletal conditions and these are some examples of what is regularly imaged:

  • Muscle injuries
  • Knee issues such as ligament injuries (ACL, MCL etc), osteoarthritis
  • Back pain – Trigger points, disc issues, neck pain, low back pain
  • Stress fractures (especially useful for early detection)
  • Neurological issues – referred pain
  • Headaches – detecting if the source is from the neck or back
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • RSI (repetitive strain injury)
  • Joint pain
  • Acute and chronic pain
  • Injury recovery assessment and monitoring
  • Arthritis - detection and monitoring
